Carmen Souza, née au Portugal de parents capverdiens, travaille depuis
ses débuts avec le bassiste Theo Pascal. Pour la première fois, leurs deux noms
s'affichent sur leur nouvel album "Epistola" (et non plus le seul nom
de la chanteuse) présenté comme "une lettre ouverte à quiconque est avide
de nouvelles expériences musicales". Enregistré à Lisbonne, Londres et New
York, le disque est en effet un laboratoire où les deux artistes mêlent leurs
influences. On y entend beaucoup de jazz sur lequel Carmen Souza pose son
identité capverdienne, ses mots en créole capverdien, en français ou en
anglais, et cette voix inimitable, radieuse, entre ton mutin et moqueur. Outre
leurs compositions, le disque comprend aussi des reprises de Horace Silver et
Glenn Miller."
